Women’s Barbour Jackets 101

I’m in year six of researching Barbour coats. I have tried on multiple sizes at multiple stores in multiple states. Regardless of my thorough internet searching, I have not been able to find a size chart (complete with chest, waist, and hip measurements) specific to women’s Barbour jackets. Another complication is, like all online reviews, the same coat has been stated to run true to size, small, and big. Of course it all depends on your particular body type, how you prefer outerwear to fit, and how many layers you plan on wearing under your coat. I found one review here and it could be a helpful reference, she bought a US 6/UK 10 in the Beadnell jacket and is 5’6, size 4/6, and has a very long torso.

So I am going to give you some (hopefully) helpful information if you are considering purchasing a Barbour jacket, specifically, the Barbour Classic Beadnell Jacket or the Barbour Waxed Cotton Utility Jacket.

My Personal Stats

  • Height: 5’5
  • Weight Range: 132-138
  • Size Range: 2-6, XS-M
  • Body Shape: Hourglass or Straight (depends on which waist/hip ratio you believe in)
  • Bust: 35
  • Under Bust: 29
  • Bra: 30DDD/E
  • Waist: 27
  • Hips: 36
  • Other Information: Short Torso, Thick Arms, Average Shoulders, Average Arm Length

The Classic Beadnell

The Classic Beadnell is one of the most popular women’s jackets Barbour sells. It is waxed cotton and comes in Olive and Bordeaux. The Beadnell comes in Sage, Navy, and Black. Read description and features of the Beadnell here. I believe the big difference is the Classic Beadnell is made of Sylkoil waxed cotton and the Beadnell is made of thornproof waxed cotton. You can read more about the materials, see a men’s size chart, and read an in-depth comparison of three popular men’s styles here. They basically perform the same, the thornproof waxed cotton is just shiner than the Sylkoil.

Description & Features Of The Classic Beadnell

A feminine take on the legendary Bedale jacket, this relaxed silhouette in soft, brushed Sylkoil waxed cotton is an ideal everyday jacket suitable for year-round wear.

  • Sylkoil waxed cotton outer jacket
  • Classic Barbour® tartan lining
  • Soft corduroy collar
  • Concealed two-way zipper with snap storm flap
  • Moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets
  • Double vented rear snap-close flaps
  • Shaped front and back for a feminine silhouette
  • Zip-in liner available
  • Snap-on hood available
  • Waterproof drip lining at hem
  • Polyester sleeve lining for easy on and off
  • Pure cotton lining
  • Waxed cotton outer
  • About 28″ long
Size US 6/UK 10 Fit
  • Length:  Covered my backside, hit little higher than mid-thigh
  • Sleeve Length: Cover palms, hit where fingers meet palm
  • One Layer (t-shirt thickness): Very loose around the chest, torso, and hips.
  • Two Layers (t-shirt and thin sweater): Pretty loose around the chest, torso, and hips.
  • Two Layers (t-shirt and oversized sweater/sweatshirt): Fit through chest, and arms. A little loose in torso and hips. However, when seated (without releasing rear snap-close flaps) good fit around hips and torso.
  • Three Layers (t-shirt, thin sweater, puffy vest): Fits and still comfortable when sitting. Warm enough for -10 degrees “Real Feel” (with gloves and scarf).
  • With Betty Vest/Liner And One Layer (long-sleeve shirt): Fitted all over but still comfortable. With scarf, warm without the need for additional layers.

Having the option of a zip-in liner and a hood makes this a very versatile jacket. The Classic Beadnell would combat rain, snow, and wind well. It fits loose enough for multiple layers. So, for me, the Classic Beadnell is the best option and since I have to do a lot of layering the size US 6/UK 10 works well. I love the hand-warmers placed mid torso and the collar snap closure which keeps the wind off my neck.

What Size I would Buy

Mild Weather: Size US 4/UK 8, North Dakota Weather: Size US 6/UK 10

Size US 6/UK 10 Fit
  • Length:  Covered most of my backside, hit upper-thigh
  • Sleeve Length: Cover palms, hit where fingers meet palm
  • One Layer (t-shirt thickness):Good fit, still have room
  • One Layer (thicker than a t-shirt, thinner than a sweater): Fitted, provides great shape
  • Two Layers (t-shirt and thin sweater): Starting to feel a little snug in arms and chest
  • Two Layers (t-shirt and oversized sweater/sweatshirt): Too snug

If I lived in a warmer climate and didn’t plan to wear my Barbour coat on any extremely cold days, I would opt for the Utility jacket because I love the fit and the shape it gives me. However, I live in North Dakota and for the cost, the Utility jacket is not a practical coat. Also, the only pockets to put your hands in are the front pockets. I don’t want to contend with big flaps. I really like the hand warmers on the Classic Beadnell.

What Size I would Buy

If buying both styles of jackets was an option, I would purchase the Utility jacket in a Size 6/UK 10 for mild days and for a winter coat (liner and additional layers), I would purchase a Size US 6/UK 10 in the Classic Beadnell.

Final Thoughts

I hope this was at least a little helpful. I believe I would have liked to have stumbled upon a blog post like this while shopping around or at least have found some measurement references (especially the hip measurement) for the Barbour jackets (all I kept finding were size charts for the US which I feel pretty well versed in). If you are looking a Barbour coats and the price tag is just a little too high for comfort, check out Nordstrom Rack for Barbour jackets at significantly discounted prices.
